Prayer Shawl Ministry

St James, St Leonard and St Swithun Prayer Shawl Ministry

This group gathers each month to knit or crochet shawls which are given away. We pray about the recipient as we choose the yarn, even though we may not know who that will be, and continue as we work. We say prayers at our meetings and the completed shawls are blessed in church. They are lovingly wrapped in tissue and we include this information.

Prayer shawls have become tangible symbols of love when words can’t be found to adequately express feelings. They can be warm hugs of happiness, empathy and support; a private place of escape in which to rest, relax and renew; something to hold on to when all else seems to be slipping away.

This prayer shawl is knit with our prayers and loving thoughts as a comfort and reassurance for you. We may not sit beside you but we are only a prayer away.

We know that they are immensely comforting to the recipient but the benefit is also for the group members.

When the Shawl Ministry first started I thought I would not get involved in this one but was persuaded to go to the meeting by a friend. How glad I was that I went!  There is a feeling of fellowship among the knitters, excitement of choosing which of the lovely yarns to use and the satisfaction when a shawl is completed. B.

Since being a member of the Prayer Shawl Ministry I have enjoyed the feelings of peace and creative fulfilment which both the meetings and the knitting at home have given me, particularly in times of stress and sadness. J.

It seems such a small thing to sit and knit doing something that I enjoy with my hands knowing that the finished article will give warmth, comfort, joy and love to someone in need.  E.

It is indeed a very powerful ministry for all concerned. We always have a stock so if you know someone who would appreciate one please let us know.

All welcome
